A Sky for Santa Isabel

Im Juli war die Einweihung des Deckengemäldes in der Lissaboner Kirche Santa Isabel. Das sublime und in seinen Ausmassen einmalige Kunstwerk (900 m2) hatte Michael Biberstein geplant im Sommer 2013 auszuführen. Leider ist er kurz davor verstorben. Aber er hatte schon früher ein Modell der Kirche erstellt und dessen Decke gemalt. Nach diesen Vorgaben hat ein kleines Team das Deckengemälde erstellt. Es ist besonders selten, dass ein Hauptwerk eines Künstlers erst nach seinem Tod realisiert wird.

The church Santa Isabel of Lisbon was completed in 1765, ten years after the devastating earthquake that destroyed more than half the city. It’s a most beautiful and precious example of early classicist architecture. At that time, there was no money to paint the vaulted ceiling. Now it has been decided to finally give Santa Isabel a sky. Michael Biberstein has been invited to make a project, a 1:8 scale model of which was shown at the Appleton Square exhibition space in Lisbon.
The official inauguration was in July 2016.

Thankfully to Bibertein's family engagement in this cause, and Appleton & Domingos Architects studio, and the support of the Santa Casa da Misericórdia of Lisbon and Jeanne Bucher Jaeger Gallery in Paris, and to several donations from international patrons and the collaboration of Factum Arte.
